Brookhaven Stair Railing Replacement & Staircase Remodel

Custom Wood Railings and Black Metal Balusters in Brookhaven, GA

Rod Railing Stained handrils and posts

This stair replacement project in Brookhaven transformed a 3-level townhouse with safer, more timeless railings designed to better match the home hardwood, oak stair treads and interior architecture.

Existing railing system used stainless steel posts with horizontal metal rods - a model style that can sometimes create safety concerns for families with young children. She was worried her son could potentially climb on the rails or get stuck between them. Beyond safety, the railing system simply didn't fit the architecture and warmth of the home.

The townhouse featured engineered hardwood floors throughout, full oak stair treads, and stained maple kitchen cabinetry. But the sleek metal railing system made the staircase feel disconnected from the rest of the interior and visually inexpensive compared to the quality of the home.

    Existing Stair Railing Conditions

One interesting detail about this project was that the two staircases that were connecting the three level of this townhouse had , each , a different stain color.

One staircase was stained in a deep reddish tone, which we later identified as Royal Mahogany, while the second one had been finished in Ebony stain.

And neither matched the hardwood flooring exactly, with only one set having some visual connection to the kitchen cabinetry.

Whether it was an intentional design or simply the result of previous remodeling phase, we had to carefully work around those existing finishes because the homeowner did not want the stairs refinished.

It is worth mentioning here that different wood species absorb stain differently, making an exact color and appearance match impossible.

Designing a Safer and More Timeless Look

After discussing different options, the homeowner selected :

    • - Square newel posts 3.5X3.5 inch with 5" base

    • - T-rail style handrails

    • - 1/2" plain square metal baluster

    • - Square flat baluster shoes to complement the trim and the base details.

    • The goal was to create something safer, warmer, and architecturally consistent with the townhouse. Instead of drawing attention to the railing itself, the new design allowed the staircase to finally feel integrated into the home.

Removing the Existing Stainless Steel System

The removal phase required careful planning because the existing posts had been mounted directly into the stair treads.

Since the homeowner wanted to preserve the stairs exactly as they were, we needed to install the new wooden posts in the precise locations of the old metal posts in order to conceal the original screw holes and minimize visible damage.

This part of the project required precision measuring, custom fitting and a lot of attention to detail.

    • The entire project involved constant measuring, cutting test fitting, and countless trips up and down the stairs to ensure every angle, spacing, and connection aligned properly. Although not a large project it took us a week and a half from start to finish.

After multiple samples and adjustments, we decided to

    • - Use Ebony stain for the post and handrail connected to the bottom staircase

    • - Use The Royal Mahogany tones for the rest of the posts and handrails in the house.

    Final Transformation

By the end of the project, the staircase no longer felt like an afterthought.

the new railings brought warmth, structure and character back into the home while dramatically improving safety for the family.

The homeowner was especially impressed with how accurately we matched both stain colors.

What started as a safety concern ultimately became a complete visual transformation of the interior space.
